A vegan dog diet for health reasons

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Before anyone thinks of throwing a stone, you should know this is approved by both our vets.  Although, sadly, the debate over whether to feed our dogs a vegan diet persists, mostly out of ignorance or misinformation. Vets have not helped. Some are pro. Others are against. But even those against a vegan diet for dogs will acknowledge to having patients who have overcome certain ailments once placed on a vegan diet even if for only 1-2 days per week. Key is nutrition and the right balance.  And there are multiple health reasons for considering a vegan diet for dogs.

My dog, for example, suffered all his life with allergies. He had parvovirus as a kid and his system never recovered. His allergies stem from that. And I only noticed late in his life. He’s now 11 years old. I started noticing my dog licking his paws a lot. For hours. Daily.

So, we took a trip to the vet. €200 later the results showed he is allergic to so much stuff in his regular diet. And it was my vet who recommended trying a simple vegan diet, knowing I’m a vegan myself.

It’s been 9 months now and he is doing amazing. No more countless hours licking his paws. No more noisy tummy. No more strange diarrheas. No more slow dog either.
He had slowed down a lot in the last year. But since changing around his diet, he’s faster, happier, calmer. And so am I.

My other dog, Mia, a 9 yearly faux lab transitioned to a vegan diet too this year. She was the last of the 3 of my dogs to move to a vegan diet for dogs. But I did have to do exams on all of them because key is a nutritional balancem, and each dog, like us, has his or her own requirements. Mia doesn’t do well with carbs like rice, for example. Do, her carb intake is way lower than the rest, and i compensate with more vegetables.

So, please talk to your vet. Make sure you pick one that is open-minded enough to look up the subject-matter. Because my home, for one, is a perfect example of how well dogs can do on a vegan diet.

If Mia is anything to go by, your biggest problem is convincing your dogs to try different foods, like vegetables. Dogs, like human kids, are picky. And it will take a whole lot of time to work out what each dog will accept and reject. Reaching the perfect balance will take time. But my pets don’t get sick. Their hair is beautiful and silky. No more bad breath. No more ailments. And the youngest is 9 years old, while the oldest is an athletic 14 year-old that whips any puppy to shame at the beach.

Accompanying my post is a video I just discovered this afternoon with recipe I am going to try out on my hairballs.  I like to switch stuff around.  I don’t like the idea of my kids sticking to the same recipe for too long.  I think having an interesting, diverse adds that little extra to their happiness and general well-being.  So, if you try the above recipe, leave a comment below and let me know how it went down at your place![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]
